St Barnabas Community Church, Shrewsbury. With 200-300 people “meeting” at the church on a Sunday, St Barnabas’ is one of the most thriving churches in the county. Whilst the evangelical approach is very different from that of the liberal Anglican tradition in which I was brought up, one cannot but be impressed by the outreach programmes that St Barnabas runs. These include the Shrewsbury food bank, debt counselling, and Journey to Work, which includes training and emotional support to develop skills and help restore the self-confidence needed to get back into the work place. Church Elder, Martin Charlesworth, and Nick Blackbourn, who had set up the visit, gave me a tour and talked me through the different activities in detail. The outreach programmes are open to all people of all faiths and no faith.
