In Shropshire, there are around 1000 people of working age, who face additional challenges, and who have been unemployed for ten years of more. Based in Telford, and sponsored by Telford-based TTC (who put on speed-awareness training courses), Wave-Length Social Marketing support people with mental health problems, learning difficulties, and those who are socially challenged, by helping them acquire the skills and the confidence to enter the work place or start their own businesses. Wave-Length have recently won a contract with Telford and Wrekin Job Centre. It was a privilege to meet Wave-Length founder Ann Johnson (who had to overcome many challenges herself after a serious spinal injury in 2002) and Lauren Jones, who together make up the Wave-Length team. The enthusiasm and determination of both Ann and Lauren was very infectious and I came away feeling that, even in the difficult territory in which they are working, they will make a considerable difference.
