The Revd Christine (Chris) Simpson
Tt is a great privilege to be asked by Tony Morris-Eyton to be his Chaplain.
I have lived in Shropshire for over 40 years, having moved here from Yorkshire shortly after my marriage. After attending schools in Huddersfield, I studied French and Education at Chester College, and obtained a B Ed Degree through Liverpool University.
I worked in a number of roles before sensing the call to ordained ministry in the Church of England. I studied to be an Ordained Local Minister on the Lichfield Diocesan Course, whilst I was working full-time as an Optical Assistant at an Independent Practice in Market Drayton. I was ordained Deacon at Lichfield Cathedral in 2007 and ordained Priest at St Nicholas’ Church, Newport, in 2008. I served my Curacy at St Mary’s Church in Market Drayton, where I remained as Associate Minister until August 2014.
In September 2014, having taken early retirement from my secular work, I was appointed NSM Associate Minister to the United Benefice of Cheswardine, Childs Ercall, Hales, Hinstock, Sambrook and Stoke on Tern. I minister across the 6 parishes and have responsibility for the two parishes of St Oswald’s Hinstock and St Luke’s, Sambrook.
In December 2017, I accepted the invitation to become Rural Dean of Hodnet Deanery, which comprises 17 churches, two of which are in Market Drayton and the rest in very rural areas. Much of my work as Rural Dean is of a pastoral nature, which is an area of ministry I especially enjoy. I have a particular concern for justice and equality issues. Since 2014, I have also been a volunteer Chaplain at HMPYOI Stoke Heath. I find this ministry very rewarding, but, unfortunately I have been unable to pursue it during the Covid 19 Pandemic.
I am married to Michael, who worked for many years as a lecturer in the Education Department of Stoke Heath YOI and is now retired. We have one son who lives in Shrewsbury with his wife and our five grandchildren.
I am very much looking forward to my term as Chaplain and to offering support to Tony in whatever ways are required
