Thursday, 2nd October. Visit to the Police and Crime Commissioner

The High Sheriff was invited to go and speak to the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, Mr Longmore with a view to understand the role of Crime Commissioners. He was also able to meet the Assistant Crime Commissioner, Mr Barry Sheldon, as well as Mr Andrew Champness, Chief Executive.

A Police and Crime Commissioner is charged with securing efficient and effective policing of a  police area in England and Wales and is elected for a 4yr term.  They replace the now abolished Police Authority, the first Commissioners being appointed in November 2012.  They are there to set the priorities for the Force, decide the budget and hold the Constable to account.
