WW1 Flanders Memorial Bed
WW1 Flanders Memorial Bed

The high Sheriff attended a short Commemoration, organised by the WW1 Memorial Committee from Shrewsbury Town Council, to remember the start of World War 1, at the Bandstand in the Quarry in Shrewsbury.

Poems written by World War 1 poets were read by Lt Ben Jeffrey, HMS Talent, Group Captain A. R. T. Smith, Brigadier G. H. Wheeler CBE. Colonel Edmund Thewles, Vice Lord Lieutenant and Mr N. Worth, Count Secretary, British Royal British Legion.

The Flanders Memorial Bed, located in The Dingle, had been created especially for the occasion and in time for the forthcoming Flower Show. As well as being beautifully planted out to reflect the memory, the Bed was surrounded by cut out wooden poppies, purposefully painted by children from a local school as a contribution to the display. A dedication of the Flanders Memorial Bed, was given by Councillor, Mrs Beverley Baker, The Mayor of Shrewsbury.
