The Mayor and Mayoress, Past Mayors, Aldermen, Mace and Sword Bearers, Magistrates, Freemen, Members of the Council, and the MP for Shrewsbury and his daughter, amongst others, assembled at Shrewsbury Castle at 9.30am before processing through the rather sleepy streets of Shrewsbury.

The lively band got a few people out of bed and there were greetings along the route from dressing-gown-clad citizens who appeared in doorways along the route to St Chad’s. It was rather fun.

Good hymns sung with gusto, good readings and an excellent sermon from Father Mark Chadwick, ending with a tandem bicycle being wheeled into the church to applause from the congregation.   The Mayor and the legendary Mayor’s driver, Bob, are both keen cyclists and I have no doubt they will soon be turning heads around Shrewsbury.   I left my bicorn hat and gloves in the church – I feel confident that I will be re-united with them soon.
