Whitchurch visit

Thursday 13th July 2017

Veronica and I visited Whitchurch today at the invitation of the Mayor, Councillor Tony Neville, and were shown around by Cllr Neville and Town Clerk Nicola Young. We first met staff at the Civic Centre, and were then taken to St Alkmund’s Church, a Grade I-listed jewel built in 1713, where we met the Rector, Revd Canon Judy Hunt, who gave us an excellent tour of the church. Following a delicious lunch in a restaurant opposite the Civic Centre, Cllr Neville introduced us to the curator at the Whitchurch Heritage Centre (http://www.whitchurch-heritage.co.uk/), which boasts exhibitions covering the town’s Roman origins, the clockmaking firm J B Joyce (active in the town until fairly recently) and the composer Sir Edward German (born in Whitchurch in 1862). We thoroughly enjoyed the day and strongly recommend a visit both to St Alkmund’s and to the Heritage Centre.
