Sunday, 9th November Meeting with French and German exchange students with 6th Form College students.

The Mayor of Shrewsbury invited the High Sheriff to meet a group of french and german students who were doing an exchange with Shrewsbury 6th Form students. The students and their teachers were invited by the Mayor to a lunch held at the new Museum in Shrewsbury on the day following their arrival. They were mostly students studying history, covering WW1 and doing research into the connection of Wilfred Owen who is buried in a neighbouring village where the French students came from close to the Belgium border. They had attended the Remembrance Service earlier at St Chads and were given the opportunity to take part in the Wreath Laying ceremony at the War Memorial. They were bright, articulate students, some with an excellent command of the English language, and they were most intrigued by our Remembrance Ceremony, the extent of which they do not experience at home. All the students were most impressed by the ceremony and in the week to come were much looking forward to exploring Shropshire and visiting Wilfred Owen’s birth place. The High Sheriff was most grateful to The Mayor to have invited him to meet these enthusiastic young historians, from both the Shropshire contingent as well as the continental ones.
