Shropshire Borders Scout Annual St George’s Day Parade and Celebration

Twelve months after the chair of my predecessor, Robert Bland, slipped off the stage sending him crashing to the floor, I bravely accepted an invitation to the Shropshire Borders Scout Annual St George’s Day Parade and Celebrations.   The sun shone in Oswestry where two or three hundred Scouts paraded through the town supported by family and friends. Accompanied by the Mayors of Oswestry and Shrewsbury I had the honour of taking the salute before taking to the stage where there was a spirited sing-song of Scout classics including If You are Happy and You Know It. I sat down cautiously for a lively address from The Reverend David O’Brien who talked about how we could learn from the courage of St George and I gave a brief speech praising and thanking the adult volunteers who give up so much time to make the Scouts the success that it is. We rounded things off with the National Anthem – both verses. It was a privilege to be involved in such a great day.
