3airforce123456A presentation of awards given to outstanding young RAF cadets of 1119 (Shrewsbury)  Squadron was held at an annual Gala Dinner Evening held this year at The Albright Hussey, near Shrewsbury. The Air Training Corps was launched on 5th February 1941 by the Father of ATC Air Commodore JA Chamier. It didn’t take long before 1119 (Shrewsbury) Squadron was formed on 1st March 1941. The squadron was originally based in a set off huts adjacent to the Shrewsbury Town Football Club, although over time the squadron has been based across a host of different venues in the town. They are are at present based at Copthorne Barracks. There motto is ‘Success Through Dedication’ and they continue to strive for this goal. Over the past 73yrs the squadron has seen tremendous success achieving commendations and awards from some of the highest levels of the Air Training Corps and RAF. The High Sheriff and his wife were invited to join the extremely charming, efficient and capable young Flight Lieutenant Elizabeth Holmes MBCh(Hons) RAFVR(T), who as well as being Officer Commanding 1119 (Shrewsbury) Squadron, she works as a full time hospital Doctor. Also present on the top table was Wing Commander Andrew Griffin RAFVR(T) and Padre Colin Wright and Mrs Wright. The High Sheriff was extremely pleased to be asked to speak to the assembled company of young Cadets and their families. It was an evening of celebration, the young cadets and their families having dressed up formally for the occasion. A fine dinner was served interspersed with speeches and awards, finishing with a disco and dancing. A very happy, jolly soiree!
