Crown Court

The Regina v Evans – a historic sex abuse case with His Honour Judge Barrie presiding.   The defendant was accused of sexual abuse of his grand-daughters when they were little girls.   Too young to be able to go through the court process, no charges had been brought at the time. Now, more than a decade later one grand-daughter had agreed to give evidence against her grandfather enabling the prosecution to take place.   I watched the alleged victim (from behind a curtain so she could not see the defendant), her cousin, her aunt (also from behind a curtain) and her grandmother give evidence and be cross-examined. I was very impressed by the considerate way that Judge Barrie conducted proceedings, the seriousness with which the jury were clearly taking their duties and the diligence of both the defence and prosecution barristers.   Over lunch Judge Barrie explained some of the court proceedings and, in particular, a ruling that he had given considerable thought to.   Clearly I only heard part of the evidence but I will still be extremely interested to hear the jury’s verdict.
