At the invitation of Group Captain Norris, Veronica and I attended a lunch at RAF Shawbury followed by a very interesting afternoon touring the base and in particular visiting the the new facilities for training helicopter pilots (including the latest generation of flight simulators) and the excellent simulators for teaching air traffic control, where we witnessed a simulated crash on the runway of an aircraft in distress. The guests of honour were Lord and Lady Trenchard. Lord Trenchard is is the grandson of Marshall of the Royal Air Force Hugh Montague Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard, who was one of the founding fathers of the modern RAF, having occupied a senior role in the Royal Flying Corps during WWI.
