Hereford Cathedral Fundraiser, Guards’ Chapel, Wellington Barracks, London

Hope, where Annabel and I live, is part of the Hereford Diocese but being over 50 miles from Hereford we haven’t spent as much time in theCathedral as we would have done were we closer.  Being High Sheriff has created the impetus to get to Hereford more often and to support the never-ending work of the Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust.   The Advent Carol Service at the Guards’ Chapel is one of the imaginative fundraisers that they put on.

On Sunday 18 June 1944 the Chapel  was destroyed by a flying bomb which killed 121 people, yet left the altar candles burning – a symbol of hope for the future.  In 1963 the new Chapel, containing the original apse, which had escaped destruction, was dedicated and opened for worship.  The Chapel has sadly held numerous funerals and memorial services for those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.

Annabel and I had never visited the Chapel before and it was a wonderful opportunity to see it, to hear the Hereford Cathedral Choir sing beautiful Advent carols, and to help raise some money.
